Simple compass course design help

I'd like to design some compass training courses for my Scout group. The idea would be to set up some rectangular or circular field layouts. Each person would be given a course heading (randomly generated) that should intersect the perimeter of the course at a known point, for the simplest example. Starting points could be either the center of the figure or at one of several pre-marked positions at its perimeter.

An advanced version would allow multiple paths to be walked between points on the perimeter — e.g., from point X in a certain direction which should end up at another point (say C), then in another given direction that should lead the person to another point if done correctly (say J), and so on. Doing the course properly would then spell out a set of letters that can be compared to the correct answer (in this case, XCJ...).

Any suggestions how to get started doing this — even the simple examples — using Cinderella?

Almost sounds to me like crop circles. Depending on the size of the area to be walked this could be the way to go. Have them create some basic patterns perhaps.
